(WINSTON-SALEM JOURNAL) — Football coaches in the CIAA picked Winston-Salem State to repeat as conference champion at their annual preseason kickoff Thursday and voted for Elizabeth City State and WSSU to win the Northern and Southern Division titles, respectively.

WSSU, the two-time CIAA champ and the NCAA Division II runner-up last season, led the overall voting, and Elizabeth City — last season’s Northern Division champ — was No. 2.

By division, WSSU led voting in the Southern and was followed by St. Augustine’s, Shaw, Johnson C. Smith, Fayetteville State and Livingstone.

In the Northern Division, it was Elizabeth City, Chowan, Bowie State, Virginia Union, Virginia State and Lincoln.
