CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- FOX Sports announced Wednesday that NASCAR on FOX on-air personality Steve Byrnes will be taking a leave of absence from the network to battle a recurrence of cancer.

Byrnes, who fought head and neck cancer in 2013, had been successfully treated and worked most of the 2014 NASCAR both in the pits during NASCAR on FOX race broadcasts and other NASCAR-related shows.

Fox8 spoke with Byrnes in May during the Coke 600 race about his fight with the disease. He said he was overwhelmed by the support shown to him when he returned at Daytona.
