GREENSBORO, N.C. — Jerry Eaves has been fired as head men’s basketball coach at North Carolina A&T Athletic Director Earl M. Hinton III announced the move Tuesday.

He said assistant Scott Bollwage will serve as interim head coach until a permanent replacement is hired.

Eaves had a year remaining on his contract, leaving the school with a 99-180 record over nine seasons, good for third on the school’s all-time win list.

The Aggies finished the 2011-12 season with a 12-20 record, including a 51-50 loss to Howard in the first round of last week’s Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference tournament.

Eaves was the starting point guard on the 1980 Louisville team that defeated UCLA for the national championship. He spent four seasons in the NBA.

Hinton said a search for Eaves’ replacement will begin immediately.
