CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Cam Newton and the Carolina Panthers have made a dream come true for a young fan with autism.
WSOC-TV reported that Alphonzo “Fonz” McDonald and his two siblings were adopted almost 12 years ago. Fonz has autism and ADHD.
He is an avid Carolina Panthers fan. Fonz’s room is decorated in black and blue; his walls are covered with his favorite Panthers players. His closet is full of Panthers gear.
Fonz’s autism makes it difficult for him to participate in organized sports. Thanks to a partnership between the Carolina Panthers, and Mecklenburg County Parks and Recreation, Fonz is able to participate in the Challenger Flag Football League.
The ARC of NC reached out to Dream On 3, an organization that grants wishes for children in the Charlotte area. When asked what his sports dream would be, Fonz said, “I want to play wide receiver for the Carolina Panthers!”
Fonz’s dream came true Saturday.
He was able to be a Panthers wide receiver, as he caught a pass from Cam Newton on the team’s practice field. He had a meet and greet with wide receivers coach Ricky Proehl, team wide receivers and quarterback Cam Newton.
Fonz also enjoyed a special tailgate on Sunday, pregame field passes and great seats to the Panthers home game against the Seahawks.
