GREENSBORO, N.C. — It’s a slam dunk for the Piedmont Triad. The 2021 Men’s ACC Basketball Tournament will now be played in Greensboro. The tournament was originally going to be held in Washington D.C., but because of the coronavirus pandemic, the conference made the switch.
In March the 2020 tournament was canceled at the Greensboro Coliseum as cases started to spike in North Carolina. Greensboro Coliseum Director Matt Brown is optimistic about welcoming players and hopefully fans back to town.
“Whether that’s 600, 2,000 or 5,000 fans for a session we’re going to be ready,” Brown said. “Hopefully by March any number of fans coming, we’re going to be ready for whatever number we’re allowed to host.”
No matter what the future holds surrounding COVID-19, he said coliseum staff will be ready to keep the complex clean.
“That’s from the score tables to the benches,” Brown said. “Throughout the whole environment.”
Also, keeping coaches, players and staff healthy too.
“The ACC has a well-defined medical committee that’s reviewing all the protocols to determine the number of teams that will be placed in what number of hotels,” he said.
It also means more coliseum employees put back to work.
“They’re dying to get back to work an event at the coliseum complex and they’re all rabid ACC fans,” Brown said.
The Greensboro Coliseum has hosted the ACC Tournament more than any other venue. It’ll be another of back-to-back championships for the coliseum starting in March. The Women’s ACC Basketball Tournament was already scheduled to be in Greensboro.
