ETOWAH, N.C. — Deputies in western North Carolina are investigating after a woman said someone stole her purse while she was praying inside a church.

WLOS reported the theft took place last Sunday at the Maple Hill Baptist Church in Etowah, about 25 miles south of Asheville.

The church’s pastor said a couple, who said they were in dire need, sat behind Liz Conway through the whole service. It wasn’t until the prayer at the end of the service, though, that the purse was snatched, the pastor said.

A card inside Conway’s purse was used for purchases totaling about $1,000 at a Walmart and a gas station about 10 miles away, WLOS reported.

The pastor said the couple appeared to be in their mid 20s. Deputies are hoping surveillance video can help them better identify the suspects.

The church took a donation for Conway, who is on a fixed income. She said the donation was enough to cover how much she had tithed over the last couple of months.
