ROCK HILL, S.C. — Police in Rock Hill are investigating the death of a woman who drowned in the Catawba River over the weekend, WSOC reported.

Investigators said 44-year-old Christie Shipley was tubing with a friend on Saturday when she disappeared.

Her body was recovered on Sunday.

WSOC’s partners at The Herald reported that the friend who reported Shipley missing went to someone’s home and “had a couple of beers” before calling police, according to authorities.

According to The Herald, officers responded around 10:30 p.m. to River Park, where a man said he and Shipley went tubing down the Catawba River and that she was missing.

The man told officers he and Shipley had been drinking while they were floating down the river. According to the police report, Shipley “kept jumping out of her tube and into the river.” The man she was with said he decided to get out of the water at the park because it was getting dark, but that Shipley stayed in the water because she was hot.
