WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — Police have charged a woman with arson in connection with an apartment fire on North Cherry Street last month.

Crews responded to the blaze on the morning of March 27 at 2036 N. Cherry St.

Officials say the fire started in a first floor apartment, spread to the other units and even damaged the house next door.

All six units inside the building were severely damaged, three by the fire and three by smoke and water. Damages were estimated at $84,000.

After further investigation, police determined that Mechell Lorraine Smith, 48, of Winston-Salem, intentionally set the fire.

Smith was charged with first-degree arson. She was placed in the Forsyth County Detention Center under a $100,000 secured bond. She is scheduled to appear in court May 1.
