RANDOLPH COUNTY, N.C. –A woman has been charged in the Tuesday afternoon crash on Interstate 85 South that killed one person and sent another to the hospital.
Ashley Toni Renee’ Belcher, of Trinity, was charged with felony death by motor vehicle, driving while impaired, driving with a revoked license, failure to maintain lane control and driving with an expired registration, according to Master Trooper Chris Knox.
Knox added that the charge of driving while impaired is based on impairment by a controlled substance and not by alcohol.
The wreck happened at mile marker 108 near Trinity shortly after 2 p.m.
According to Highway Patrol, a Honda Civic, driven by Belcher swerved into the median, came back onto the road and sideswiped an SUV. The SUV then overturned into the median.
Highway Patrol said the driver of the SUV was killed and a passenger in the SUV was taken to the hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.
Knox said Tuesday evening the driver of the SUV was identified as Angela Freeman Jones, of Denton. Her husband, Douglas Shane Jones, of Denton, was the passenger who was taken to the hospital.
Belcher is being held in the Randolph County Jail under a $50,000 secured bond.
