FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — A woman was arrested on suspicion of tying up her 4-year-old son to a stake in the backyard and shooting her dog.

Dana Gabbard, 26, is charged with aggravated animal cruelty, cruelty to animals and second-degree endangering the welfare of a minor.

Police responded to Gabbard’s residence after she called into a suicide hotline saying she was feeling homicidal toward a neighbor, according to KFSM.

When officers arrived, they spoke with Joshua Gabbard, who said he had put the dog “out of his misery” due to the abuse suffered from Dana Gabbard.

The dog was reportedly shot multiple times with a BB gun by Dana Gabbard.

Gabbard admitted to slamming the dog down outside, whipping him with a braided leather belt and shooting him point blank with a BB gun.

While at the residence, the Department of Human Services requested that Dana Gabbard’s 4-year-old son be placed in the custody of his grandmother. The living conditions were reportedly “horrid,” according to the warrant.

The 4-year-old son said he witnessed the abuse to the dog by Dana Gabbard and also said his parents would place a collar and leash around his neck connected to a stake in the ground outside.

Joshua and Dana Gabbard tested positive for marijuana, according to the warrant. Joshua Gabbard also tested positive for methamphetamine.

Dana Gabbard is being held on a $5,000 bond, and her next court date is scheduled for Dec. 31.

Joshua Gabbard, 33, was also arrested on Dec. 3. His bond was set at $5,000.
