CARY, N.C. — A woman who posted a Facebook photo of a dog with its mouth duct-taped shut appeared before a Wake County judge on Monday, according to WRAL.
Katharine F. Lemansky, 45, caused a firestorm on social media after she posted the photo.
“This is what happens when you dont shut up!!!” she wrote in the caption, using the Facebook name “Katie Brown.”
The photo had been shared about 400,000 times by people hoping that police would find and arrest the woman.
Lemansky wrote a second message on Facebook saying, “Dont panic everyone it was only for a minute but hasnt barked since… POINT MADE!!!”
Lemansky was arrested the following week in Cary, where it was revealed that the alleged abuse took place.
During a brief court appearance Monday, Lemansky got a court-appointed lawyer to handle her defense, WRAL reported.
If convicted, she faces a fine and a possible jail sentence of up to 150 days.
The dog was not removed from Lemansky’s custody because Cary Police Capt. Randall Rhyne said there were not signs of injury to the dogs muzzle or detectable hair loss from the tape. He added that the dog appeared to be well cared for.
