HIGH POINT, N.C. -- A woman is accused of snatching wallets from shoppers at two Harris Teeter supermarkets in High Point, according to High Point police.

Police say the woman has been preying on elderly women and stealing their wallets while they’re getting their groceries.

The latest theft happened last Wednesday at the store off Skeet Club Road.

Police say in that case, the woman reached into the victim’s purse, grabbed her wallet and later bought $1,500 worth of gift cards.

Police say similar thefts have happened seven other times.

Joyce Nelson is 87-years-old. She had her credit cards stolen at the Harris Teeter on Skeet Club Road last month.

“I went to check out and then I started to dig in my purse and there wasn't any credit card, no credit cards,” Nelson said. “I went to the clerk ‘Oh my goodness, I can't buy these groceries because I don't have any way to pay for them.’”

When she got home about 15 minutes later and started canceling her cards, hundreds of dollars’ worth of charges were already made.

“It's a shame things like that have to happen,” Nelson said.

Anyone with information is asked to call High Point Crimestoppers at (336) 889-4000.
