WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — Leigh Somerville looked out of place, according to The Winston-Salem Journal.
The dining room was filled with 40 or so veterans. Most were in their 60s or older, and all but one were men. Nearly all of them were dressed casually in jeans, tees or golf shirts and they stood together in small groups.
The gathering, informal as it was, is a monthly meet-up organized specifically for veterans to swap stories and promote fellowship among people with a strong common experience.
Somerville, by contrast, isn’t a veteran. In fact, for much of her life she resented the military and was opposed to all war. Even seeing trailers for the hit television show MASH provoked a strong reaction.
