WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — The City of Winston-Salem Sanitation Division worker who was struck by a vehicle and seriously injured on Nov. 19 succumbed to his injuries Tuesday morning.

Alexander Bell, 59, of Winston-Salem, was struck on Darwick Road around 10:30 a.m. last Wednesday.

Police say that the driver of the SUV, Carol Black Snyder, of Winston-Salem, told them she saw the garbage truck, but did not see Bell in time to stop.

The accident was determined to be the result of pedestrian error.

Bell had worked for the city for 21 years.

The N.C. Division of Occupational Safety and Health, which had been investigating the accident, has reclassified its investigation as a work-related death. Anthony Baker, an assistant city attorney and the city’s risk manager, said the city is cooperating fully with the investigation.

Snyder has not been charged.
