WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — A Winston-Salem police officer shot a man Saturday night after he allegedly threatened police.
At 10:25 p.m., police responded to a 911 call from 461 Bedford Knoll Drive. The 911 caller was identified as a resident of the home, Kara Bessinger.
Bessinger reported that the father of her child, Marshall Allen Wiggins, was intoxicated, armed with a shotgun and threatening to commit suicide. Authorities also learned that Marshall Wiggins was threatening to harm any officers that responded to the residence.
Minutes later, several officers with the Winston-Salem Police Department arrived on scene and began to establish a perimeter around the home. Marshall Wiggins continued to make threats against the officers now on scene. As a perimeter was being established, Marshall Wiggins opened a garage door from inside the residence and began to exit the garage while pointing a shotgun at the officers.
In response to the threat, Officer King discharged his issued service weapon. Marshall Wiggins was struck and immediately incapacitated. Officers summoned emergency medical services personnel to the scene and Marshall Wiggins was taken to Baptist Medical Center where he is currently listed in serious but stable condition. Kara Bessinger, her young child, and the officers at the scene were not injured during this encounter.
The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation responded to the scene and assumed the primary investigative role. The Winston-Salem Police Department’s Criminal Investigations Division responded to the scene and assumed the investigation into the assault on the officers. An administrative investigation will be conducted by the Winston-Salem Police Department’s Professional Standards Division.
As part of the investigation by detectives with the Criminal Investigations Division, authorities determined that earlier this year, Kara Bessinger petitioned for and subsequently received a Domestic Violence Order of Protection against Marshall Wiggins. That Order of Protection remains in effect until April 25, 2017.
