WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- The Winston-Salem Police Department honored Officer Russell Willingham Monday, one year after he was killed in the line of fire.
The department is wearing black over their badges and the honor guard is standing at the officer's memorial until 7 p.m. after starting at 8 a.m. this morning.
Police said Willingham was driving down Vargrave Street when his car ran off the road and hit a tree, catching on fire and leaving him trapped inside.
Winston-Salem police said they do this for all their fallen officers.
Corporal Todd Hart was Willingham's supervisor and described the man as a friend and fellow comrade.
"It is definitely a good honor to stand out here and represent the department and remember Russ," he said.
