WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Jim and Diane Painter love their “Contempo” sign. It’s big. It’s bold. It’s different. Some might even call it iconic, a landmark in a valley of ever-changing billboards along Business 40, according to the Winston-Salem Journal.
The city, however, sees it as something of a nuisance, out of compliance with the 422-page Uniform Development Ordinance, and thus has ordered its removal by year’s end.
However you look at it, at 57 feet from base to top, 12-feet in diameter, the Contempo Concepts modern furniture sign certainly stands out.
“It’s the City of the Arts. We wanted something that felt like art. Something different,” said Diane Painter, showing the original renderings of the sign spread out on a coffee table in Contempo’s showroom on Brookstown Avenue.
