GREENSBORO, N.C. — The victim of an assault early Sunday morning has died, police said on Wednesday.

Warren Portis, 28, of Winston-Salem, and a friend were walking west on Friendly Avenue near Commerce Street at approximately 2:30 a.m. on March 16 when they were assaulted by three men.

The three suspects fled the scene in a vehicle.

Portis was transported to Moses Cone Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Police are now investigating this incident as a homicide.

Initial reports indicated that the assailants fled the scene in a silver Nissan. However, that description may have been inaccurate. Police have not been able to confirm the make, model or color of the suspects’ vehicle, but do know that it was a four-door vehicle.

Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 336-373-1000.
