Winston-Salem companies’ workers accounted for after typhoon

Typhoon Haiyan spared workers at several local Winston-Salem businesses with ties to the Philippines.

The massive typhoon hit the island nation Friday, destroying cities and towns.

The death toll rose Wednesday to 2,344, according a national tally kept by the disaster agency. That figure is expected to rise when accurate information is collected from the whole disaster zone.

Village Tavern has about 70 employees at its restaurant in Manila, the nation’s capital.

All the employees are safe and accounted for, said Tony Santarelli, president and chief operating officer of the company.

“I’ve made contact very day since the storms with the folks just to see how things are going,” he said. “You see it on the news, and you can’t even fathom what they’re going through.”

Santarelli said Village Tavern is partners with The Bistro Group, which has more than 50 restaurants in the Philippines. He said The Bistro Group is in the process of planning ways to help with relief efforts. Village Tavern will be helping with those efforts, Santarelli said.

“Whatever we can do to help, we’ll do,” he said.

Hanesbrands has 25 employees in the Philippines, all of whom are accounted for and safe, said Matt Hall, a spokesman for the company.

Hanesbrands is assessing options to assist in the recovery efforts, he said.

Silkroad Technology also has a site in Manila and all employees there are safe, spokeswoman Ginger Nixon said. She said Silkroad is encouraging its staff around the world to donate to the relief effort through the Red Cross. The company also is looking into additional relief programs at the corporate level, she said.

Krispy Kreme has more than 20 franchises in the Philippines, and according Lafeea Watson, a spokeswoman for the company, all employees are accounted for, as are the shops.

“Krispy Kreme prefers not to publicly share information on corporate donations in order to keep the focus on the people in need and not the brand,” she said.
