WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — The Winston-Salem City Council has approved a new spending plan that is aimed at adding and retaining city workers.

Council voted 6 to 2 to approve the budget for the fiscal year beginning in July that would add 14 positions to the police department and five positions in the fire department.

The plan also increases police pay for experienced police officers along with a merit raise for all other city employees.

In the past few years, Winston-Salem has struggled to retain experienced employees and council members hopes the pay increases will help with that problem.

The budget does come with a cost. Water rates, sewer rates and landfill rates will all increase.
