BISCOE, N.C. — Deputies said the head volleyball coach at East Montgomery High School was arrested on Friday after he allegedly kissed a member of the volleyball team.
According to a news release, deputies began investigating Julius Ryan on Tuesday after they received a report he kissed a member of the volleyball team who he had been sending text messages to.
On Wednesday, deputies said Ryan denied the allegations. He was asked to leave the school’s campus at the time due to the ongoing investigation, deputies said.
When questioned, the victim told investigators that Ryan had been sending her messages using KIK, an instant messaging app that deputies said was found on both of their cell phones.
According to deputies, the victim said the messages were not sexual, but “made her feel uncomfortable.” The victim then told deputies Ryan kissed her on Sept. 11 inside his classroom.
Lt. Kelley Howell with the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office said investigators reviewed surveillance video from Sept. 11. The video showed the student walking into Ryan’s classroom, however Howell said the alleged kiss is not shown on video.
Ryan is charged with indecent liberties with a child. He was jailed in Montgomery County under a $25,000 secured bond.
Deputies said all other members of the varsity and junior varsity volleyball teams were interviewed, but no other allegations were made against the coach.
