HIGH POINT, N.C. -- Multiple High Point Fire Department teams rushed to 1320 Florida St. to battle a house fire. A neighbor that called 911 described the Monday morning fire as "a big one."

A family of six was at home at the time. They were able to safely run out of the house and call 911 for help.

High Point firefighters were able to contain the fire to the sunroom, kitchen and living area. A SUV parked next to the home was also damaged. Rooms like bedrooms suffered a great deal of smoke damage. Now the investigation begins. For now, High Point Fire Department Battalion Chief Michael Foster said investigators are concentrating their efforts in the sunroom.

"She said she was cooking just prior to the fire starting," Foster said. "She turned it off. She heard something outside and went out there to check and that's when she found the fire. Then she grabbed everyone and they evacuated."

A cooking accident could be one of the many reasons behind the west High Point house fire. If investigators believe that this was an accident, this wouldn't be the first accidental kitchen fire of the season.

"So it is a problem," Foster said. "People need to be sure that when they are cooking they need to stay with it and not leave it."

Foster reminds homeowners need to have at least one smoke detector and a fire extinguisher.

The cause of the house fire is listed as undetermined. Fire investigators will continue searching for clues.

High Point fire believes the home is a total loss. The American Red Cross is assisting the family.
