IREDELL COUNTY, N.C. — Detectives say it was no accident when at least five cars were hit by big, sharp objects Saturday night on Interstate 77 near Mooresville.

Drivers are reporting that it appears someone is throwing objects off the Rankin Hill overpass at mile marker 39.

Five vehicles were hit within 45 minutes of each other on the same stretch of interstate, officials say. One person was injured and the damage to all the cars is costing thousands of dollars.

Because of this incident, deputies and state troopers are patrolling overpasses in the area more than usual.

They urge drivers to be on the lookout and to call 911 if they see anything suspicious.
