EDGEFIELD, S.C. — The U.S. Geological Survey has confirmed a 4.1-magnitude earthquake happened in South Carolina near Edgefield at 10:23 p.m. Friday.
The quake occurred seven miles west-northwest of the town of Edgefield. Edgefield is approximately 25 miles north of Augusta, Ga., and around 60 miles southwest of Columbia, S.C.
This is often considered a “light” earthquake with minimal damage possible.
The earthquake occurred 160 miles from Greensboro at a depth of 3 miles.
Some people on Facebook from as far away as High Point and Wallburg have reported feeling tremors.
A FOX8 viewer in Asheboro said in an email they “felt the house tremble.”
Reports indicate the earthquake was also felt in Georgia — including the Atlanta area — and even southeastern Tennessee.
The town of Edgefield has about 4,750 people, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.
“Since at least 1776, people living inland in North and South Carolina, and in adjacent parts of Georgia and Tennessee, have felt small earthquakes and suffered damage from infrequent larger ones. The largest earthquake in the area (magnitude 5.1) occurred in 1916,” according to the U.S. Geological Survey website.

@wxbrad Brad I'm 30miles from Edgefield… That was intense. Sounded like a jet while riding a wave.
