WHITSETT, N.C. — After investigating the shooting death of a 15-year-old last week, the district attorney’s office has decided to move forward with charges against his 15-year-old friend.

The 15-year-old was charged through juvenile petition with involuntary manslaughter.

The accused boy’s mother broke into sobs as she talked about the accusation with the News & Record.

“We got notified yesterday that he was charged with manslaughter,” she said. “I don’t know what to say.”

The News & Record did not use the mother’s name to protect the identity of the juvenile.

In addition, Beverly Cobler, a relative of the juvenile charged, was charged with failure to secure firearms from a minor.

“It was a tragic accident,” the mother of the child charged said. “I’m going to lose my son over it.”

The shooting happened at a mobile home on Thacker Dairy Road early last week.
