The United Animal Coalition received a third extension to pay $300,000 in animal abuse and neglect fines from the state, extending the deadline to April 17.
The N.C. Department of Agriculture granted the extension to allow the coalition to resolve a controversy stemming from the decision to transfer ownership of two accounts to the SPCA of the Triad, a Greensboro shelter. The accounts — one containing donations to help sick and injured animals at the Guilford County Animal Shelter, the other holding money for a new county shelter facility — total around $230,000.
“We believe it’s in the best interest of the animals for those dedicated funds to go to the county, so we will allow (the coalition) time to work that out,” said Brian Long, a spokesman for the N.C. Department of Agriculture.
