CONNELLYS SPRINGS, N.C. -- Two young children died early Thursday in a house fire in Burke County, according to WSOC.

WSOC reports eight others were able to escape the blaze, which broke out around 3 a.m. at a home on Old Laurel Road near Miller Bridge Road. Three of those who escaped were taken to an area hospital to be evaluated.

A state trooper who tried going inside the home was treated at the scene for smoke inhalation. Fire officials say the flames and smoke were too intense for anyone to enter the home when rescuers arrived.

A total of five adults and five children were inside at the time. According to WSOC, the ranch-style home was shared by two families. One lived in the main portion of the house, while the other lived in the finished basement.

The children who died have been identified as an 11-year-old boy and a 6-year-old girl. They were in two separate bedrooms of the main floor of the home.
