RALEIGH, N.C. — Trial is set to begin for a man charged with raping and killing a 5-year-old Fayetteville girl more than three years ago.

The Charlotte Observer reported that the trial for 32-year-old Mario Andrette McNeill is planned to begin Monday in Cumberland County court.

McNeill is charged in the death of Shaniya Davis, whose body was found in November 2009 in Harnett County among deer carcasses in a ravine off a rural highway.

McNeill also faces charges of child rape, kidnapping, child abuse, human trafficking and sexual exploitation of a minor.

The trial is expected to last three months. McNeill could face the death penalty if convicted.

Authorities said Davis’ mother remains in jail on charges that she gave her daughter to McNeill to pay a drug debt.
