Rutherford County, N.C. -- The Party Rock Fire has grown to more than 6,000 acres across western North Carolina. According to fire officials, it is 32% contained.

Thursday afternoon, about 900 firefighters worked on the fireline to keep the flames from reaching homes.

Captain Sydney Hailey with the Greensboro Fire Department is leading a team of four to defend homes.

"Right now we're dealing with multiple agencies from different places and we're all coming together to form one type of group to try to control the fire that's going on in the mountains," Hailey explained.

The challenge Hailey says is that he and other city crews are not trained to fight forest fires. Departments in High Point, Kernersville, Pinecroft and Asheboro also sent crews to help. Hailey says they will do whatever is needed to get the fire under control.
