GREENSBORO, N.C. -- The graduation ceremonies may be winding down, but the parties are just getting started.

So what gift do you give a grad besides money?

Students graduating from Weaver Academy in Greensboro are happy and excited over the party and the money.

There is no question that money is the number one graduation gift.  The money cards are the first to go at Hallmark, but what if you don't want to give cash or a check?  You can't go wrong with a new laptop computer.

"Well she's most thrilled about the Macbook Pro, which is preparing her for college," said Anthony Patterson talking about the gift he gave his daughter, Carolina Patterson.

"I was just overwhelmed with excitement when I got it," said Mary Laura Kennedy, a Weaver Academy grad who also got a Macbook Pro.

If it's something less expensive you're looking for, there are plenty of practical gifts you know your grad will use.

"I really feel like a coffee maker, like towels or things like that -- just things I can really utilize in college," said Kennedy.

"Maybe a mini fridge, some bedding and things I can take to my dorm room," said Allyson Cogan, graduating from Weaver Academy.

You can find a lot of cute ideas at the mall, too - like a snack basket with movie tickets or gift cards.

"I feel like those are pretty good gifts because then you can get what you want and just the practical things are really what we need, not the grand things," said Kennedy.

Although the grand things do make a statement, but overall, grads want something they can use at college or in their careers like professional clothes or a leather portfolio, but if none of those ideas work for you -- grads are always appreciative of money.

Another gift idea gaining in popularity among college grads is a financial planning session.  An experienced adviser can give them a lesson about budgeting and paying down debt.
