ONSLOW COUNTY, N.C. — Three children are dead after a fire ravaged through the home of an Onslow County family early Thursday.

WNCT reported the fire happened around 5 a.m. at a house in Jacksonville. The station reported nine people were trapped inside the house when firefighters arrived.

The mother and five children ranging in age from 4-16 were able to escape. However, Gabriel Pittman, 7, Elijah Pittman, 9, and Tabitha Pittman, 12, were found dead inside the living room. Firefighters believe the three may have been overcome with smoke.

Three teens and the mother were taken to a local hospital, while one child was airlifted to UNC Burn Center. The fifth child who escaped was treated at the scene and released.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

The Pittmans had moved to this house after their previous house caught fire eight years ago.
