THOMASVILLE, N.C. -- Pastor Tom Fields said the need for a women’s only facility is so great he is already getting calls from Tennessee, West Virginia and South Carolina for placement availability at the Bethany House.
Thomasville City council recently voted to rezone the property from commercial to a residential property to help Pastor Fields and the members of Bethany Baptist Church start their mission.
“The city of Thomasville has really worked with us and I’d just like to thank them for their help rezoning here that we could have this place for our community,” Fields said.
The Bethany house is more than a temporary facility but a 12 month program.
Women will have access to job skills training, resume building and GED education if they need it.
Any money made during their stay will be put into accounts so when they leave they can start anew.
Fields said the Bethany House will start by housing six women, but with renovations to the home, he hopes to house up to 15 o 16.
“Our society looks at the women with so much baggage because they come with children so there are not so many facilities for them,” Fields said. “We plan to overlook that and offer them a place to restart their lives.”
A couple from his congregation has offered to devote their time and run the Bethany house living with the women full time for support.
Pastor Fields said the facility should be open within a couple of months.
