SAN LEANDRO, Calif. — An 18-year-old high school student who was wearing headphones was killed Monday evening when she was struck by an Amtrak train.

According to KPIX-TV, Brittney Silva of San Leandro, was found dead near the tracks by police.

Witnesses told investigators that Silva was walking southbound along the east sidewalk of Hesperian Boulevard wearing “earbud” style headphones and as the train approached the intersection one of the witnesses yelled at her to try to warn her of the approaching train.

However, Silva didn’t respond to the witness, possibly because she didn’t hear him, according to police.

The railroad’s crossing arms were reportedly functioning properly at the time of the collision.

Silva was getting ready to graduate high school.
