GREENSBORO, N.C. — D’Angelo Matthews, 17, made his first appearance in the Guilford County Courthouse by way of video in jail.

Matthews faces a charge of robbery with a dangerous weapon with a maximum of 19½ years and first-degree murder with a maximum of life in prison without parole.

Because Matthews is only 17 years old, he does not qualify for the possibility of the death penalty.

Greensboro Police Captain Mike Richey said Matthews did not act alone. Two other juveniles were arrested and charged Tuesday for the robbery and death of 74-year-old Larry Brown.

“We were able to identify the suspects as a 14-year-old female, a 15-year-old male and the 16-year-old that we announced — D’Angelo Matthews actually turned 17 today,” Richey said.

Captain Richey said that the teenagers are all from Greensboro.

Guilford County Schools spokeswoman Nora Murray confirmed Matthews is a rising junior at Page High School.

Matthews has no prior record.

“These three individuals robbed Brown of items of minimal value and he lost his life for just a senseless crime,” Richey said. “There is indication that these three could have been involved with some minor crimes in the area, earlier in the evening but nothing that rose to this level or this style.”

Brown was found dead yards away from his Greensboro apartment early Wednesday morning. Police said he was on his daily walk to the bus stop on the corner of Greenbriar Road and Church Street.

Neighbor Mary Landreph said Brown never met a stranger.

“He’d be walking up there to catch the bus on top of the hill and he always went to the homeless shelter to eat breakfast with his friends,” Landreph said. “I was very hurt that someone could do something to someone so sweet as Mr. Brown was.”
