LIBERTY, N.C. — Three suspects are in custody after shots were fired in the direction of a Liberty police officer Friday morning.

At about 2:40 a.m., a Liberty police officer noticed a vehicle driving through town that was weaving. Liberty Police Chief David Semrad said the officer suspected the man was drunk and noticed his tags were expired, so he initiated a traffic stop to slow the vehicle down.

As he did, the vehicle continued driving and went down Old 421 Road, eventually crashing into a wooded area. After the crash, police say shots were fired by at least the driver, and possibly the other suspects. The three then ran away from the scene. It is unknown if the shots were fired directly at the officer or in a general direction.

Randolph County Sheriff, Robert Graves, says a suspect was found hiding in a swampy area off Lake Juno Road. A press release from Liberty Police says officers later arrested two other suspects. The K-9 unit was used to find them.

Deputies say they were driving in a stolen SUV that had been involved in an armed robbery in Wake County.

Police identified the three men as 18-year-old Christopher Pagan, of Raleigh, 22-year-old Kolani Coates, of Durham, and 20-year-old Montravius Malik Montgomery, of Apex, according to a press release.

The North Carolina State Highway Patrol, Guilford County Sheriff’s Office and Randolph County Sheriff’s Office were all involved.

The officer was not injured and the investigation is ongoing.
