Suspect in custody in shooting of volunteer firefighter

CATAWBA COUNTY, N.C. — A suspect is in custody in connection with the shooting of a volunteer firefighter in Cleveland on Monday, Dec. 2.

According to police, Khari Dewayne McClelland, 23, is in custody in the Newton-Conover area and investigators from Rowan County will pick him up this evening.

Officials said Marcus Kauffman and his wife had just returned from a Thanksgiving trip out of town when they noticed a suspicious car.

Deputies said Kauffman drove his wife to a neighbor’s house and when he returned, he was shot in the back of his head.

Deputies said they are looking for McClelland after they found the suspect vehicle that was involved in the crime.

Officials said they are working to identify another person in connection with the shooting. The suspects were reportedly stealing from the victim.
