ROANOKE, Va. — The woman who survived a shooting that killed a TV reporter and photographer was released from the hospital Monday, according to WDBJ.

Vicki Gardner, the executive director of the Smith Mountain Lake Chamber of Commerce, was shot while answering questions during an on-air interview on Aug. 26.

Gardner has undergone two surgeries since then.

Her husband, Tim Gardner, told WDBJ the bullet came within “centimeters” of taking her life.

Gardner said she wakes up every day with a renewed sense of strength and optimism.
