DOBSON, N.C. — An elderly shooting victim has died, but an investigation of the case remains open, a Surry County Sheriff’s Office spokesman said Tuesday.

Donald Gray Hall, 83, whose address has been given as Pebble Lane, Dobson, in southern Surry, suffered a gunshot wound to the head at his residence on the morning of Jan. 13 which initially was reported as self-inflicted. Hall died later in the week at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem.

But despite the indication that the elderly man shot himself, investigators have made no official ruling as to whether the incident was a suicide or a criminal act.

That determination will be aided by an evaluation of items gathered at the scene, according to Lt. David Hamlin of the Surry Sheriff’s Office.
