DOBSON, N.C. — Officials said a 19-year-old Surry County man on a motorcycle died after he lost control and went underneath an oncoming pickup truck.

The Mount Airy News reported that Jacob Chance Beck, of Dobson, was killed in the wreck, reported around 6:40 p.m. Wednesday.

Authorities said Beck was going around a curve and lost control on Route 601 at the intersection of Mt. Herman Church Road.

He was riding motorcycles with his father, who was in front of him on a different motorcycle, according to Surry County Emergency Services Director John Shelton.

The driver of the 2008 Dodge Ram 1500 will not be charged in the crash, according to officials.

The victim appeared to be an inexperienced rider, according to Trooper J.L. Gallimore of the North Carolina Highway Patrol.

Gallimore said the victim had gotten a motorcycle learner’s permit in January and had just put insurance on the motorcycle earlier in the day. He could not confirm rumors that he had just bought the motorcycle.

Authorities said speed and alcohol are not believed to be factors.
