SURRY COUNTY, N.C. — Surry County Commissioner Paul Johnson was arrested Friday morning by the State Bureau of Investigation.

Johnson has been the subject of an SBI probe into alleged financial misconduct over his expense reimbursement reports dating back to 2011.

An investigation was started around mid-March when questions arose regarding reimbursements made to elected officials. County Attorney Ed Woltz told the Mount Airy News that an audit revealed discrepancies that identified one unnamed member of the board.

A copy of the audit, obtained by the Mount Airy News, revealed that Johnson may have received $9,167.78 since 2011 for what Woltz called “inconsistent” reimbursement requests.

Some of the reimbursements appeared to be for attending meetings that allegedly did not exist or for meetings Johnson allegedly did not attend.

Few other details have emerged regarding Johnson’s arrest.
