WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — The STEAM Academy of Winston-Salem is no more after the N.C. Board of Education approved the relinquishing of the school’s operating charter.
The experimental middle school will close its doors June 30, according to the Winston-Salem Journal reports.
An N.C. Department of Public Instruction spokesperson confirmed the information on Thursday afternoon.
The school’s enrollment plunged by more than 70 percent over the past seven years. In March, the school’s general fund was reported to be more than $700,000 in debt.
