Speeds in excess of 100 mph played role in crash that killed 3 in NC

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — State troopers closed all northbound lanes of Interstate 77 near uptown early Monday morning for nearly three hours after three people were killed in a crash involving a tractor-trailer.

Investigators said it was one of the worst crashes they’ve seen in a long time.

Officials told WSOC a BMW slammed into the back of the big rig at a high rate of speed around 1:45 a.m. on I-77 near Clanton Road, becoming pinned underneath it.
