GASTONIA, N.C. — A son is charged with killing his bedridden mother.

According to investigators, the suspect set a fire in the bedroom at their home on McFarland Drive in Gastonia and then left.

Jerry Gibble, 47, faces arson and first-degree murder charges and was booked into the Gaston County jail.

WSOC reports that the son, Gibble, had just gone to Myrtle Beach to pick up his mother a few weeks ago. Police believe in that short time, the care she needed became too much for him.

Gibble’s neighbor, William Christenbury, said Gibble seemed excited for his mom to come stay with him.

Investigators said Dixon died in the fire in her bedroom after being overcome by carbon monoxide.

It was reported that Gibble set it while she was sleeping then then left the house to pick up his girlfriend from work and run a few errands.

Police said Gibble’s mother suffered from mental deterioration.
