GREENSBORO, N.C. — REI has flipped the script on Black Friday.

The Seattle-based outdoor sporting goods retailer — with a store on West Friendly Avenue — recently announced that it would close on Black Friday, the biggest shopping day of the year. Instead, the company is encouraging its employees to indulge in the outdoors and spend time with family and friends.

They are likely to be the lone wolf, but that’s a good strategy in the retail business, said Roger Beahm, executive director of the Center for Retail Innovation at Wake Forest University. For retailers, it’s all about doing something different to stand out and generate interest in their brand, he said.

“It’s not about following the herd,” Beahm said. “It’s about leading the pack.”
