GREENSBORO, N.C. -- The Smith Senior Center in Greensboro flooded for the second time this summer on Friday, temporarily closing the gymnasium.

Wednesday night's heavy rains washed in three inches of water into the center's gymnasium soaking the sport court flooring.

"The amount of rain that fell in such a short amount of time, just didn't have anywhere to go. It came in under our escape door in the back of gym and flooded our gym," said Senior Coordinator Jennie Matkins.

Greensboro Parks and Recreation staff say the tile floor underneath the water was not damaged and the pieces are being dried by After Disaster Water and Fire Emergency Team.

On June 25, four inches flooded inside the lobby area of the center during heavy rain. The clean up bill has not yet been billed to the city.

Greensboro spokesperson Donnie Turlington said the Smith Center has never had a history of flooding during thunderstorms.

Next week, the Storm Water Division will inspect the pipes and drains to make sure there is not a clogging issue.

AHOY Senior Exercise classes and walking lap opportunities will still be available at the Greensboro Sportsplex this weekend.

Shuffleboard, cornhole and table tennis were cancelled on Friday evening.

Monday Zumba classes will be moved to Room #2.
