Some Piedmont counties could see light rain mix with or change to some snow late Wednesday and early Thursday.

On Wednesday, there is a 30 percent chance of rain showers as a cold front moves in. Snow showers could occur Wednesday night and early Thursday morning as an upper air disturbance moves to our southeast and then up along the coast.

"A cold front is crossing the state today, chased by a cold core of upper level energy.  This is likely to produce up to 3 inches of accumulating snow in the western mountains of Ashe and Watauga counties and a Winter Weather Advisory is in effect until midnight," said Meteorologist Emily Byrd.

"In the Piedmont, temperatures will be slow to warm up, but with some afternoon sunshine, highs will be in the lower 50s. Precipitation, in the form of light rain mixed with snow, is a possibility through the evening hours.  A dusting is possible up to midnight, and most precipitation will be east of the Triad by the early hours of the morning," said Byrd.

Drivers will want to use extra caution Thursday morning as temperatures settle to 30 degrees near daybreak.  Any moisture on Piedmont roads may freeze enough to produce patchy black ice for the early commute.
