DALLAS — Twelve police officers were shot during a protest in downtown Dallas Thursday night and five have died, according to Dallas police.

Dallas Police Chief David Brown said two snipers shot officers from elevated positions during the protest.

Dallas Area Rapid Transit said on Twitter that four DART police officers were shot and one died.

Two civilians were also shot, according to KDFW.

In a news conference held at about 12:30 a.m. CDT Friday, Brown said officers were in a standoff with a suspect at the El Centro garage. Brown said the suspect has told officers “the end is coming” and that they plan to kill more law enforcement officers. The suspect also said there were bombs in the garage and around downtown Dallas.

In another news conference held around 8:41 a.m. Friday morning, Brown said the garage suspect was killed by a police-detonated bomb on a robot. He also said that the suspect was upset with the recent police shootings and wanted to kill white cops. He was not affiliated with any groups.

In addition, he said a female is in custody who was in the area of the El Centro garage.

Two other people are in custody following a brief police chase. Brown said a Dallas police officer observed an individual carrying a camouflage bag who threw the bag into the back of a black Mercedes and sped off. Officers pursed the vehicle, stopped it on Interstate 35 and took two suspects into custody for questioning.

“We still don’t have a complete comfort level that we have all the suspects so we will continue a rigorous search of downtown until we are satisfied that all suspects have been captured,” Brown said.

In a live press conference Friday morning, President Barack Obama, who is in Poland for the NATO summit, said the shootings were “a vicious, despicable and calculated attack on law enforcement.”

DART’s twitter identified the first of five slain officers as 43-year-old Brent Thompson Friday morning.

The shootings happened just before 9 p.m. CDT as protesters were marching near Lamar and Main streets.

The protests stemmed from officer-involved shootings in Louisiana and Minnesota this week.

Officials will continue to investigate the incident.
