GREENSBORO, N.C. — Guilford County school board members voted unanimously, 9-0, to make Dr. Sharon L. Contreras the new superintendent at Tuesday night’s meeting.
Contreras, who has been the superintendent of the Syracuse City School District since 2011, will start on Sept. 1.
“It is overwhelming to feel this kind of warmth and people sending this kind of good will,” Contreras said. “It speaks to the kind of community this is that people deeply want the schools to be successful."
Her salary as the Guilford County Schools superintendent will be $250,000 per year.
Contreras’ term ends on June 30, 2020.
Contreras emerged as the top contender for the new superintendent of GCS after a five-month search that included more than 30 applications from across North Carolina and the U.S and multiple interviews with school board members, according to Guilford County Schools.
“The board did an exhaustive search, a search that went all over these United States,” said Amos Quick III, vice-chairman of Guilford County school board. “We were looking for the best candidate, best fit for our community."
The school board began its search in February, and hosted four public forums and two forums for employees to provide feedback on the characteristics sought in a new superintendent. Employees and the public also could share the characteristics they wished to see in a superintendent via an online survey.
