CONWAY, S.C. — A judge on Saturday denied bail for a South Carolina man accused of sexually assaulting a woman who was then brutally beaten by her boyfriend.
WMBF reported that 52-year-old William Mattson was charged with criminal sexual conduct early Thursday morning after police were called to a home in Conway.
Police said they were called to the home in response to a sexual assault, but when they arrived, they found Mattson was injured.
A 27-year-old man was at a home when he heard moaning coming from another room, according to police.
Police said he opened the door and saw the suspect on top of his girlfriend. The victim told police it was not consensual.
Police said the boyfriend kicked down the door, started beating the suspect and chased him out of the house.
Conway Police Lt. Selena Small said the boyfriend “was acting in defense of his girlfriend who was being raped.” He has not been charged.
