GREENSBORO, N.C. – Police are searching for the man that fatally shot a security guard while he was working at a grocery store Saturday night.

Anthony Charles Smith, 51, of Winston-Salem was working security inside the Food Lion on Market Street when he was confronted by his assailant and sustained the gunshot wound, according to police. Smith died as a result of his injuries, police said.

Police said the suspect ran away on South English Street toward McConnell Road.

The suspect was described as a light skinned, heavy set black male in his early 30’s, 5’10”-6’ tall, last seen wearing a black hooded sweatshirt, black pants, a black hat and Nike sneakers.

Police said that there were many shopper in the store at the time of the shooting.

Investigators asked that anybody inside of the store between 7 and 7:30 p.m. to please either call Crimestoppers (336) 373-1000 or Detective A.R. Hinson (336) 574-4004. The investigation is ongoing.
